Torrox Costa And Torre Del Mar

“The best climate in the costa del sol” Torrox Costa and Torre del Mar by all accounts this is a pretty accurate description of the weather in these parts. Torrox Costa lies 6 kilometres west of Nerja whilst its parent, inland village of Torrox is just 3 kilometres to the north. Torrox village marks the origin of this town whilst Torre del Mar has built up over the last 30 years and developed into a thriving tourist resort.

The village of Torrox retains much of its original charm, a typical Andalucian village with its narrow streets and local shops and restaurants. The main square is a delight to take morning coffee, enjoy the local tapas bars and watch the world go by. The outskirts of the village have expanded with new developments and apartment complexes to cater for the local population.

Torrox is also the gateway to the inner Axarquia region of small villages dotted amongst the rugged mountain scenery, such as Competa, Alfarnate, Iznate, Canillas de Aceituno and many more.

It’s a good idea when visiting and walking throughout the Axarquía region to try and catch one of the local festivals. Many of the fiestas centre around the natural products of the area, the most famous of these is the Dia de Migas celebrated on the Sunday before Christmas in Torrox. Migas are basically breadcrumbs and were once the staple diet of the country folk of the area and an essential source of energy. On Migas Day, the locals gather to sample migas prepared with different additional elements and the sweet, local wine. If wine is a favourite of yours then head for Cómpeta in August when the Noche de Vino sees the uncorking of barrel after barrel of the local wine. Alfarnatejo pays tribute to the humble Gazpacho and Iznate celebrates the Moscatel grape. Olive oil, the mainstay of local diets has its fiesta in Periana and the little orange fruit, the nispero, found only in Andalucía gets its turn in Sayalonga. All these festivals and many more are celebrated throughout spring, summer and autumn.

There is a wonderful promenade that extends all the way to the marina at Caleta de Velez. The town has a great atmosphere and is equipped with good amenities for holidaymakers, including supermarkets, restaurants, bars, discos, and much more. The 500 metre beachside stretch of El Copo is a parade of bars and discos, which in the summer open until 6am. There is also a summer night market open until 3am on another stretch of beachfront.

Down on the coast at Torrox Costa everything is prepared so as to enjoy the beaches and the long promenade leading westwards from the Torrox lighthouse, where every type of bar and restaurant can be found. There are many tourist complexes offering apartment and villa accommodation, all with landscaped gardens, swimming pools, tennis courts and all types of recreational activities. The Riu Ferreira hotel sits in the middle of the promenade and is an ideal choice for holidays.

The proximity of Torrox village to its modern counterpart on the coast makes this area an interesting choice, offering traditional village life with nearby modern coastal attractions.

Torrox, like Nerja, will also benefit from the new marina, scheduled to start in 2016, that will be built on the municipal border between the two towns.
